Winter Car Care Tips

February 18, 2023

Winter weather can be unpredictable. Make sure you're prepared.

Winter weather can be unpredictable. One minute it's sunny and mild, the next you're stuck in a snowbank or dealing with icy roads. To ensure your car is prepared for whatever nature throws its way, here are some tips for winterizing your car:

1. Have your car serviced for winter conditions. Prepare your vehicle for the rigors of winter by having it serviced before you encounter any treacherous snowy conditions.

Check Battery - As the temperature decreases, your
car's battery power lessens, which makes starting it in the winter more taxing. If your battery is already having problems, replace it before the temperature drops.

Check Fluids - Make sure all your fluids are at the proper levels and that they're appropriate for cold weather conditions. This includes antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid and oil.

Check Belts & Hoses- Inspect all of your belts and hoses to make sure there are no cracks or signs of wear. Replace any that are worn before the weather gets too cold.

Cooling System - Have your cooling system flushed and refilled to help prevent frozen pipes when temperatures drop.

2. Make sure you have the right tires for winter driving. You don't want to be stuck in a snowbank or worse, on ice without the proper tire traction! Ensure your car has good quality all-season or winter tires so you can stay safe.

3. Stock your car with winter must-haves. Stash a few basic items in the trunk of your car to prepare for any potential winter emergency, such as:

• A blanket or extra layers of clothes

• Jumper cables

• Ice scraper and snow brush

• Tire chains

• Flashlight and extra batteries

• Extra windshield wiper fluid

• Non-perishable snacks

4. Always carry an emergency kit. In addition to the items listed above, make sure you have a first aid kit, flares or reflectors for visibility, a basic tool kit and a shovel in case you get stuck in the snow.

5. Make sure the gas tank is kept at least halfway full. If you get stranded in the cold, a low gas tank may cause the fuel line to freeze. Fill up your tank before heading out on trips and make sure to top it off if you know bad weather is coming.

Winter driving conditions can be dangerous, so it's important to make sure your car is in top shape before you hit the roads. Following these tips for winterizing your car will help keep you and your vehicle safe this winter season!
